With an endless number of hashtags you could be using, how can you choose the best hashtags? Better yet, how can you research hashtags to ensure you are using the right ones to promote your business?

 

Social media hashtags are used across several platforms, but the most common are Instagram and Twitter. We’ve seen Facebook and LinkedIn both utilize hashtags as well, but they are not as commonly used on there.

  • 5 high competition hashtags (1 million+)

Hashtag FAQ

Here are common questions regarding the use of hashtags that may help you during your selection process.

How many hashtags can I use?

You can include up to 30 hashtags on a regular post, and up to 10 hashtags on a Story. If you try to include more, your comment or caption won’t post.

 

That said, just because you can use that many hashtags for Instagram doesn’t mean you should. There’s no right number of hashtags for every business, or even for every post by the same business.

 

The consensus is that about 11 hashtags is a good number to start with. Half of Instagram accounts use between 1 – 3 hashtags.

 

Update 7/2021: Instagram recently noted that between 8-15 hashtags is where you should be.

Can I use the same hashtags on every post?

Because Instagram’s algorithm is constantly changing, we recommend switching up your hashtags often. Instagram seems to see the same use of hashtags (with no changes) similar to that of a bot and is more likely to NOT show your post to more people.

 

For this reason, we recommend using our “CMC Ideal Hashtag Combo” for each individual post.

 

Okay – but I don’t have time to come up with new hashtags for every single post – what should I do? Switch them up when you have time. If daily isn’t ideal for you, look into weekly or bi-weekly.

What are local hashtags and why should I use them?

Local hashtags allow you to target your local market. If your services are specific to your area or region, then you should be using local hashtags.

 

Example:

If you are a real estate agent in Las Vegas and you focus on representing clients in that area, you should focus your hashtags on the local market. There may be hashtags your market likes to use to support local businesses. You can also expand it to the larger region/state around you.

How do I know which hashtags to use?

When it comes to selecting hashtags, we recommend using our CMC Ideal Hashtag Combo. Once you’ve identified what that may look like, you’ll want to ensure the hashtags you use abide by the following:

Hashtags that have over 1 million corresponding posts won’t benefit you as much as a hashtag with 50k-500k (this is our ideal target hashtag usage #).
